Selina, Our Junior Journalist Visits The Oldest Sweet Shop In England, Reet ‘Ere In Yorkshire

Hello readers and welcome to my monthly article. I was inspired by Yorkshire Day so my review this month is very much linked to Yorkshire and is something for us all to be very proud about! In Yorkshire sits the Oldest Sweet Shop in England. It is located in Pateley Bridge in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales near Harrogate…

This shop started trading in 1827 but the building actually dates back to the 1600’s. It is set up like a traditional sweet shop with all the different original 1950’s sweet jars lined up behind the counter. The most popular of these being sour raspberry bonbons.

They also sell the oldest type of sweets, barley sugars. In the shop they keep with the trends but try to sell sweets made with natural ingredients not all artificial so parents can approve of this place. They also sell chocolates too with over 20 suppliers from all over the world! I decided to try the traditional Yorkshire Mixture. It was very tasty and it was nice to see such original sweets compared to the usual ones you find in the supermarket. It is very educational to see what it was like to go into a sweet shop in the olden times.

They even use an original till which is over 100 years old and old scales too!  Don’t worry if it is too far away to get to as they do mail orders too so you can order all your favourite sweets online!

As the oldest sweet shop in England it is very famous. They appear in the Guinness Book of World Records and many books and magazines. The owners of the shop have been on TV many times! People such as Paul Hollywood and Robbie Coltrane have visited the shop but they get people from all over the world going to visit. The owners have owned the shop for 20 years and never expected such fame. They bought the business simply because it’s a nice friendly business with a positive atmosphere. Also they like it because people of all ages have memories of sweet shops and different stories about them. I would like to add how friendly and nice the owners actually are and they will get you everything you need.

Overall I think the Oldest Sweet Shop in England is definitely somewhere to visit or order from as you will never have an experience like it! Why not visit it and buy a bag of Yorkshire Mixtures or one of the many other sweets they sell for yourself – it sure is a real treat!
