180 mile bike ride led by father of local teenage cancer patient and bereaved father raises over £15,000 for charity to support young people with cancer.
Mark Moore, 45, father of local teenage cancer patient, Dominic Moore, 21, and Steve Flynn, 58, who was riding in memory of his son Kyle, have raised a total of over £15,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust, by undertaking the Coast and Castles bike ride for Teenage Cancer Trust.
The group of 11 cyclists rode a gruelling 180 miles across three days from Newcastle up to Edinburgh in June. The money they raised will go towards the Teenage Cancer Trust unit at St James’ Hospital in Leeds, where Dominic is currently receiving treatment.
Dominic Moore, said: “I am really proud of my dad Mark, my brother Josh and the lads as they finish the cycle challenge. They’ve done an amazing job and all the money raised is going to an amazing cause. Hopefully in the next year or two, I will be able to complete the challenge by their side.”
In January 2016, Dominic was rushed straight into hospital after seeing his GP where he was diagnosed with an extremely rare blood condition known as Aplastic Anaemia. This condition affects 1 in 500,000 people. After months in and out of hospital, he is now preparing for a bone marrow transplant.
Dominic added: “I have found being in hospital very difficult to say the least, most of my time there been spent in ‘isolation’ for fear of me contracting further infection. The care and support I have had at the unit has made all the difference for me.”
Mark Moore, father of Dominic, said: “Thank you to everyone who has supported this great cause. Dom has still got a long battle ahead of him but I know that with the support he receives, his journey will also be filled with love and laughter. It has been amazing to witness and benefit from the fantastic support that is provided by the Teenage Cancer Trust, so I am so pleased to have been able to raise funds to ensure other young people like Dom have access to the same care and support he has had.”
“These young people shouldn’t have to face these battles so early in their lives but the Teenage Cancer Trust makes a real difference and I am proud to help in any small way I can.”
Steve Flynn, who was riding in memory of his son Kyle, said: “I signed up to the challenge in memory of our wonderful son Kyle who sadly passed away in March this year after a 7-month battle with Leukaemia. Teenage Cancer Trust provided Kyle with endless emotional and physical support and I would like other young adults to have the same support that Kyle did.”
Heather Bowen, Regional Fundraising Manager at Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “Such a fantastic amount has been raised by Mark, Steve and all their fellow riders. We are very grateful for this generous donation and for their help in raising awareness.
“We’ve made great progress in making sure that young people with cancer have the best treatment, care and support but there is so much more to do. At the moment, for every young person Teenage Cancer Trust is able to reach, there’s another we can’t. This must change. The money raised by Mark, Steve and all the riders will make a huge difference in helping us expand our services to reach all young people with cancer by 2020.”
