LEEDS MAN TREKS THE LENGTH OF THE COUNTRY IN SUPPORT OF BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION

Charity

Andrew Thorpe, A retired consultant cardiothoracic surgeon joined the fight against heart disease by trekking the epic John O’Groats to Lands End challenge with 20 Summits in between to help support the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) lifesaving research.

Andrew Thorpe, having undergone successful heart surgery 12 years ago wanted to give something back to BHF. On Tuesday 3rd April 2018 Andrew started his epic challenge and reached Lands’ End on Friday 15th June raising over £5,000 for BHF with gift aid.

Andrew said “I wanted to get involved because I am a cardiothoracic surgeon and have been involved with research throughout my career. Stem cell research, myocardial regeneration, heart preservation and the prevention of premature death research are very important. Also having had a successful bypass operation myself I would like give something back and to encourage research and appointment of more BHF professors around the country”

Heart and circulatory disease is responsible for around 155,000 UK deaths each year – around one every three minutes. In Yorkshire, there are 620,000 people living with circulatory disease and each month this causes 1,150 deaths.

BHF urgently need more people to join their fight for every heartbeat and help power life saving research. They are calling on everyone across the UK to organise their own event to help support vital work.
