Otley Sailing Club in Yorkshire has secured Olympic legacy funding to the tune of £50,000 from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

To date, more than 1,300 local sports projects across the country have now received National Lottery funding through Inspired Facilities, part of the Sport England Olympic and Paralympic legacy programme. Sport England announced an extra £40million would be available to extend the Inspired Facilities fund to 2017.

Otley Sailing Club has secured the £50,000 (the maximum grant) from Sport England to make extensive alterations to the Clubhouse, making it even more accessible for disabled users.

“The award is fantastic news for the club,” said Peter Fox, Otley Sailing Club’s RYA Sailability Co-ordinator. “We will be creating better disabled facilities and integrating them into the entire clubhouse. We are already an RYA Sailability “Centre of Excellence” and we plan to build upon our 25 years of experience to make our sailing centre as inclusive as possible.”

“I am extremely pleased that Otley Sailing Club is going to benefit from Olympic legacy funding,” said local MP, Greg Mulholland. “The award is great news for the inclusivity of the sport of sailing and the improved facilities will build on the club’s successful “Sail Free” programme and will maintain the proud history of the Club.”

Sport England’s Chair, Nick Bitel, said: “A year on from the Olympics, this National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in South Yorkshire.”

“With investment now on offer from our Inspired Facilities Fund until 2017, we look forward to supporting many more sports clubs in the region who play such a vital role in grassroots sport.”

“I am delighted to see that Otley Sailing Club has been successful with the Inspired Facilities application,” said David Staniforth, Chairman of the RYA Yorkshire and Humberside Region. “These new and refurbished facilities will be great for sailing in the region and will allow many more people to take part in the sport.”

“I would also like to congratulate all the volunteers on their hard work and success in making this happen.”
