CharityLocal News

Around 2,000 primary schoolchildren from across Leeds joined forces as part of the Ann Maguire Memorial Fun Run, to raise money for a number of different charities.Children from 32 local primary schools in Leeds and the surrounding area took part in the run at St Theresa’s Catholic Primary School, Barwick Road, Leeds, on Tuesday, 3rd May with support from Holy Family Catholic Primary School and the Leeds Association of Roman Catholic Teachers.
Having encouraged more than 116,000 children to get running through over 200 events so far, the GO Run For Fun campaign is already the biggest children’s running initiative in the world.
Peter McQuillen-Strong, Headteacher of Holy Family Catholic Primary School, said: before the event “Last year’s event was an amazing success and the GO Run for Fun team carried out the run impeccably. We couldn’t do it again this year without their support.
“To see the joy on the faces of thousands of youngsters crossing the finish line was just amazing and we hope those taking part in the event this year have just as much fun.
“We have more schools taking part this year which is great and I hope that the children are able to remember a much loved teacher in this way for many more years to come.”
GO Run For Fun recently celebrated as its 120,000th participant in the campaign crossed the finish line in Marseille, France.
Moving more is an important part of tackling childhood obesity which is fast-becoming one of the leading areas of public health concern in England.
By the end of this year it aims to encourage many more kids to get off the couch, give the TV a rest and get active.
The GO Run For Fun campaign is the idea of Jim Ratcliffe, owner of INEOS, one of the UK’s largest manufacturing companies, which announced a £1.5m donation spread over three years to encourage children to run for fun via the GO Run For Fun charitable foundation.
He explained: “I’m passionate about getting as many children as possible running in their lives. The idea is simple – to get children out of the house having fun. It is not rocket science. Running is the basis of so many great sports. If our children can catch the running bug early, they’re more likely to stick to it, and this can only lead to them having more active and healthier lifestyles in the future.”
GO Run For Fun will continue to tour the UK throughout 2016 with other events planned for Wakefield, the Isle of Man and Gateshead to name just a few.
