Festivals Artistes Bands Events – May 2016

It is going to be a loud month, as Slam Dunk rolls into Leeds on the 28th May. However, they may not quite reach the decibels of Trivium who blasted Yorkshire last month in their typically brash loud fashion. The Barbican in York was not quite sure what had hit the venue when they performed there. The tour showcased their excellent latest record Silence in the Snow. The album, which is a slight deviation from their earlier works, is of course anything but silent: Full on heavy metal is what you get from the Orlando band that when performed live just about shakes every bone in your body to breaking point.Festivals Artistes Bands Events
Whether Slam Dunk 2016 will be as loud is debatable. 2016 will mark the 10th Anniversary of Slam Dunk Festival and is set to be its biggest since it started in 2006. Taking place over the Spring Bank Holiday 2016, the festival will welcome an increased capacity to a huge 40,000 music fans.
Slam Dunk Festival has won ‘Best Festival’ at the Kerrang! Awards in both 2014 & 2015. Widely regarded as the biggest awards in rock, the festival beat strong competition from major events such as Reading / Leeds and Download. Slam Dunk has also been in the final shortlists for ‘Best Metropolitan Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards, in 2013, 2014 & 2015, and ‘Best Festival’ (up to 15,000 daily capacity) at The Live UK Awards 2015.
Headlining in 2016 will be Panic! At The Disco with an exclusive UK festival performance.
Over 40 bands will play across 7 stages including other festival exclusives from Of Mice and Men (Ben Ray organiser of Slam Dunk Festival says: “This really feels like it represents the anniversary of the festival, Capdown who played the very first event, Set Your Goals reforming to play, The Starting Line with a very rare UK appearance, and Zebrahead who have so much fun they want to play every year! There’s also still so many bands to be announced, it’s going to be a great year!”
It’s hard to disagree with that assessment SET YOUR GOALS are back and SDF16 has the exclusive on these reunion shows! “We are thrilled to be back on Slam Dunk this year. We’ve taken much time off and it only felt right that our first festival back be with you guys. We want to thank everyone attending for inviting us over, and we hope to give you one of the best shows of 2016!” says the band.
MALLORY KNOX have enjoyed huge success since the release of their 2nd album, Asymmetry. With Radio 1 A-list plays under their belt, tours with some of the biggest bands in the scene, a sold out London Roadhouse show and various magazine covers, the band will be sure to be one of the big draws of the weekend. “I get the same amount of excited for Slam Dunk every year since it has been on my radar and I love that.” says front man Mikey. “Whether we are playing or just attending to watch it’s always a weekend that’s one of the highlights of my year. With the line-up this year, I have no doubts 2016 will be much the same.”
ZEBRAHEAD have become part of the Slam Dunk family and as the band says “Slam Dunk Festival has always been a blast. This is our third time playing and we are really looking forward to coming back for the shows. The crowds are always crazy and come to have a good time.” Slam Dunk Festival will also be the only place to see New Found Glory in the UK in 2016.
Slightly quieter but with no less an impact is She Drew The Gun from Liverpool whose rather brilliant album Memories Of The Future is released on the 15th May. The debut draws lyrical inspiration from Louisa Roach’s (aka She Drew The Gun) own real life experiences. Whilst the chugged guitars and a laid back percussive tempo glide effortlessly through a chorus of glacial blues tinged understated and soulful sublime offerings. Self-scrutiny and drunken reflection, are just a few of threads in the rich tapestry and myriad of intertwining themes found within She Drew The Gun’s music. They aren’t afraid to explore or veer outside the norm with a Sci-Fi protest song and dreamy love song straight out of a Kurt Vonnegut novel amongst the gems on the album.
The Slam Dunk Festival 2016 is going to be one to remember for sure!
