Yorkshire Day 1st August

Local News

BY ERIC SCAIFE – YORKSHIRE DIALECT SOCIETY

Yorkshire Day was created in 2005 in answer to local government reorganisation of the counties. This tried to drop the word, Ridings  from our county. Yorkshire is three Ridings and always will be. Riding comes from the Viking word, Thrithing, which means a third part.

We have a right to be proud of our county. Many famous men and women who have shaped the history of the world have come from Yorkshire. We have some of the finest and most varied countryside in the whole of Great Britain. Our sportsmen are some of the finest in the world.  Our dialect could be considered to be the true English language. Speak many words as they are written and you are talking in a Yorkshire dialect. Is there an o and an r in water?, so why pronounce it ‘worter’. Its ‘watter’. Is ‘door’ spelt ‘dor’ or ‘road’ spelt rode, No, so emphasise each letter and in many cases, you will be speaking like a true Tyke.

My name Eric Scaife is from the Viking meaning powerful and awkward, neither of which applies to me!! though some would disagree on the latter. I am publicity officer for the Yorkshire Dialect Society, the oldest existing dialect society in Europe and possibly in the world. I speak to many different groups throughout Yorkshire on the subject of dialect history and humour, including groups as little as four and as many as four hundred. I have also been on TV and radio including Countryfile and Penelope Keith’s Hidden villages. On Yorkshire Day,
August 1st, I will be reading the Yorkshire Declaration of
Integrity in Temple Newsam courtyard at 12 noon and also I will then be at Lotherton Hall in the afternoon. Everyone is welcome
to join me.

The Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity

“I  (your name), being a resident of the (west , north or east ) Riding of Yorkshire  (or City of York)  declare;

that Yorkshire is three Ridings and the City of York, with these boundaries of  1141 years standing;

that the address of all places in these Ridings is  Yorkshire;

that all persons born therein or resident therein and loyal to the Ridings are Yorkshire-men and women

That any person or corporate body which deliberately ignores or denies the aforementioned shall forfeit all claim to Yorkshire status;

These declarations made this Yorkshire Day 2017

God Save the Queen”

There will be many events throughout the county celebrating the day. Whatever way you choose to enjoy the occasion I wish everyone a happy and fun filled YORKSHIRE DAY.
