Viper strikes in Leeds

Local News

Officers from Operation Viper arrested three people and seized 90 suspected stolen mobile phones during morning raids.

A team of officers put a ring of steel around the centre of Leeds and used specialist technology to hunt for stolen goods.

Officers visited shops selling phones and identified if the phone was being legitimately sold.

The operation bore fruit as 90 suspected stolen phones were taken away.

Chief Superintendent Dave Oldroyd said:

“Mobile phones are a vital part of modern life for a lot of people but their value makes them attractive items to steal for criminals.

“The aim of Operation Viper is to get stuck into criminals and to make sure they have no place to hide. So anyone stealing a mobile phone or then selling it on better be looking over their shoulder as we will be running more operations like this in the future.

“Law-abiding residents can also feel assured that the issue of mobile phone theft is one that we take seriously and operations like this that are held in busy public areas featuring large numbers of highly visible police officers will have criminals running scared.”

A man aged 25 was arrested on suspicion of burglary and a 28 year old man arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods. A 33 year old man was also arrested on suspicion of theft and handling stolen goods.
One of the arrested persons has been released on bail. The others are still detained.
