The Airedale Terrier

Wagging Tales

As we celebrate Yorkshire day this month we take a look at the Airedale Terrier that originated from our county. It is reputed that the Airedale Show gave the breed its name. Many ‘Waterside Terriers’ from the valleys of the rivers Wharfe, Calder and Aire were exhibited at the show, making up a large entry.
The Airedale known as the ‘King Of Terriers’  is the largest in the group and has remarkable scenting powers. It has been used in Africa, India and Canada for tracking. Airedales have also aided the Red Cross in times of war and has seen service with police and in the armed forces of both Britain and Russia.
Class: Terrier
Height: Males 22 – 24 inches (56 – 61 cm)  Females 22 – 23 inches(56 – 58 cm)
Weight: Males 50 – 65 pounds (23 – 29 kg) Females 40 – 45 pounds (18 – 20kg
Lifespan: 10 years +
Coat: The double coat is waterproof and needs a daily brush and comb. It’s advisable to have the dog professionally stripped about the time they shed which is twice a year. The standard KC colour of the coat is – body saddle black or grizzle, also this includes the top of the neck and top surface of the tail. All other parts should be tan. However ears can often be a darker tan, and shading may occur round neck and side of skull,  there may also be a few white hairs between forelegs but these are all acceptable.
Health: A very hardy breed, although some may suffer from eye problems, hip dysplasia and skin infections.
Temperament And Exercise: As with all Terrier breeds the Airedale can be stubborn, firm and fair training is needed. They are an excellent family dog, particularly good with children and always ready to join in their games. Not aggressive by nature but protective of their family, and a devoted companion. Airedales were bred for active work, and therefore need plenty of exercise. Most of them love to play with a ball, swim or retrieve objects and once fully grown will happily run alongside a bicycle.
