Leeds Flower Show 2014-150th Anniversary

Lifestyle

Even in the depths of Winter, preparations are well underway for the 2014 Leeds Flower Vegetable and Craft Show being held on 2nd and 3rd August at the Grammar School at Leeds.

Exhibitors will be planning which categories they will be entering choosing and sowing seeds, tending young plants and vegetables with a view to them being perfect for the August show.

Bakers, wine makers, photographers, artists, embroiderers and wood carvers all making plans for their entries.
The hard working and enthusiastic committee will be planning the schedule, layout of the halls, organising speakers and contacting traders. Also encouraging sponsors and advertisers.

This year is a Special Event being the 150th year since the first Leeds Horticultural Society’s Flower Show was held in 1864.

It was held in The Drill Hall of The Leeds Volunteer Rifles – this was sited in Oxford Road at the side of the Town Hall. Sadly the building was demolished in the 50’s.

We aim to replicate that show on a smaller scale with a Marquee set out in the style of that first show and based on the reports that we have from the Newspaper of that time – The Leeds Mercury June 22nd 1864—‘ incorporating attractions including groups of flags and shields, tastefully selected and arranged …….. and devices in artificial flowers depending from the girders of the roof’ .

We will seek to reproduce some of the varieties of plants, flowers, vegetables and fruits which were on display at that time and feel that this will be of huge interest historically both in Heritage terms and also horticulturally.
The Main attractions for the show will be posted on the LHS website with details of opening times and admission.
Anyone wishing to become a sponsor or enquire about a trade stand – please contact through the website.
