Aireborough Camera Club’s Photographic Competition

Are you always viewing the world through a lens? Carry a camera with you everywhere you go? Then you may be interested to hear that Aireborough Camera Club is organising its third photographic competition, which will be open to all non-professional photographers of any age. The subject of the competition this year is “Yorkshire Cities, Towns and Villages” – images can be of buildings, structures, spaces or persons from any city, town or village in ‘God’s Own County’. There are three competition classes: ‘Primary’ (up to and including 11 years of age), ‘Secondary’ (12 to and including 18 years) and ‘Adults’ (19 years and above), and there is no entry fee. The camera club will accept email images taken on any device including cameras, ipads and mobile phones as well as prints.
Aireborough Camera Club began in the 1920’s when a group of people interested in photography got together to share this interest on a regular basis. Of course, back then the cameras were different and the thought of mobile telephones existing let alone being able to take photos on them was inconceivable but the ethos of the club still remains the same today. There are presently 26 members of the club which is a member of the Yorkshire Photographic Union, and the group meet at the theatre in Guiseley every Wednesday evening between the months of September and May. The evenings are an interesting mix of talks from professional photographers, practical evenings and competitions within the club and against other clubs. New members are always welcome!
Three years ago, the club decided to hold its first open competition to raise awareness of photography, encourage people to look at their surroundings and of course to boost membership of the club. This first competition was titled ‘My Aireborough’ and was very successful. With sponsorship from the Aireborough Rotary Club and the Aireborough Forum, along with other small businesses, the club has been able to continue the competition each year.
As in previous years, a winner will be selected from each class and they will be invited to a presentation evening in September where they will be awarded with a financial prize and a certificate. They will also be given the option of a year’s free membership to the club (excluding the primary section). Their winning photograph will be displayed in Guiseley Theatre and the results will be published in local publications. The competition closes on Saturday 30th July.
