Diary Of A PawnbrokerFeatures

Schools Out For Summer!

The school summer holiday has begun and this marks an interesting time in the jewellers and pawnbrokers calendar. Parents who until now have been managing perfectly well with their work / life balance suddenly have a house full of children demanding money, holidays and most costly of all – their time!

What this means for most retailers is a complete slow-down of trade. People don’t have the spare time to go shopping and with the obligatory 1 or 2 week holiday abroad looming, they don’t really want to spend their money either.

As a result the pawnbroking arm of the business can get really busy and many customers are looking to borrow a few hundred pounds to help with their holiday cash flow. Our FX sales hit their peak and Euro’s and Dollars flow out in their £1000’s.

Customers continue to bring in their unwanted gold and sell whatever they can to raise some funds, however one thing we are beginning to notice is the demand for yellow gold and heavy gold chain is beginning to return. Many people took the opportunity to sell their heavy gold when the price was at its peak and the going got tough. Trends changed and the demand to purchase and wear the yellow metal fell off.

Perhaps money is starting to filter through or people have just missed wearing it, however now the demand is back but supply is hard to find. Most heavy chain was melted into bullion during the credit crunch so your best chance of finding a quality solid replacement at the right price is a second hand jewellers or pawnbrokers.

Brown & Gold continues to develop and grow but we have to respond to the ever changing trends in the market.

  • Our Shipley branch ‘Christopher Brown Jewellers’ has reached its first anniversary and is doing really well. Many customers have used us for the first time and the reputation and customer base continues to grow. So has our diamond and Rolex trade at this branch so pop along and meet the team if you are in the area.
  • Seacroft branch has had a refit to extend the Financial Services office and create a separate jewellery section as demand for high value pieces increases.  This has such a community atmosphere and a really happy buzz about it.
  • In Toxteth we have built a new ‘Buy-Back’ lending department. Lending on electrical items is a growing part of our business and the purpose built section will offer a large electrical retail area as well as the opportunity to borrow against or sell your smart phones, laptops and IPads.

Finally, with Yorkshire Day on 1st August, why not call in to one of our stores and commission your very own unique piece of Yorkshire Jewellery?

We can design and make a Yorkshire Rose set with your own diamonds and precious stones or how about a flower cluster ring or earrings to complete your collection.

So don’t sit around waiting for the summer holidays to pass you by, call in to your local Brown and Gold branch and make the most of your precious summer.
